What to Feed your Cavalier
Why Raw Diet?

There is much written—I would recommend a raw diet versus store bought dry food (supported by dog food advertising). The cost of raw food is at least twice that of quality dry food and has to be stored frozen. However there are significant health benefits.

The advantages of feeding a raw diet are

  • Semi-moist or dry dog food sit in the dogs stomach for over 12 hours because it takes the enzymes that long to digest the food- a dog vital internal organs need the enzymes to function at their best

  • Raw food is digested in less than four hours—in addition, dogs produce less than 25% stool as they use most of the food, making it much easier for clean up

  • Vitamins in dry dog food get lost in the manufacturing process, and deteriorate as soon as you open the dog food—vitamin B&C deteriorates and is needed for health teeth and gums

From "Give Your Dog a Bone",

“I was highly suspicious of grains as dog food, having observed that where grain is fed to dogs (not necessarily as commercial dog food - but even as 'healthy' whole grain human type  foods) there  is a high correlation with a range of degenerative diseases including arthritis, pancreatic disease and even cancer…………The biochemical/physiological basis for problems directly related to the ingestion of grains relates to blood insulin levels in response to blood sugar levels. The ultimate effects of high carbohydrate diets include swings in blood sugar and insulin, insulin resistance and high blood sugar. This in turn results in pathological alterations in eicosanoid production which in turn leads to obesity, hypertension, fluid retention, musculoskeltal, vascular, renal, hepatic, CNS and cardiac disease, and finally in many instances cancer. That is, the ingestion of grain and other starchy foods (including simple sugars of course) produces or helps in a major way to produce most if not all of the degenerative diseases. There are other factors which are involved, particularly when it comes to feeding commercial pet food, including a lack of protective factors, abysmally poor protein quality, the presence of toxins in abundance, and the almost complete absence of healthy fats.

MINERALS

I would recommend Wholistic Canine Complete Joint Mobility from The Wholistic Pet -www.thewholisticpet.com for distributors--would recommend buying 8 lbs (can last 6 months in any non hot location—i.e. basement)—take out enough to put in shaker bottle—refill as needed.

Also would recommend Wholistic Salmon Oil— As we know saturated fats as found in meats are bad for health while unsaturated fats found in fish are good. Unsaturated fats are essential for Cavalier health—Omega 3 has anti-inflammatory benefits and helps prevent heart disease and Omega 6 lowers blood cholesterol and supports the coat.

VITAMINS

Would recommend extra vitamins—use code 70679 to get breeder discount

Feeding Your Cavalier Puppy

In the first few days whilst trying to acclimatize to new surroundings a puppy may loose its appetite and often you will be tempted to try all sorts of food in desperation. Remember he may have had to compete for attention at meal times, now on his own he has no reason to hurry his meal. Do not change his diet as it will upset his stomach. You can hand feed or just add some cut up raw vegetables to make the meal more appetizing.

If the puppy is plump then he/she is eating enough. As a general rule, puppies should be fed 3 times a day from 8 to 12 weeks and twice a day from then till they are between 9 and 12 months old.

Feeding Your Adult Cavalier

An adult Cavalier should normally receive one meal per day. If the dog is getting fat you are offering too many tid-bits. Remember you are looking for a well balanced dog. Raw vegetables are always well received but put in food as treat--- but never scraps from the table from the meal that you didn't finish yourselves

Clean water must always be available for the dog to drink. Use a bowl attached to the  crate ZW99110. Keep fresh water--change the water every other day.

PUPPY (12 weeks-6 months)—1/2 RECOMMENDED AMOUNT--- TWICE A DAY (morning—evening)
