It is important to understand than even if the sire and dam have been screened and found clear of any health problems, no breeder can guarantee that your puppy will never develop a problem during its life time. If you research MVD, in England studies 50% of Cavaliers over 5 years of age have some form of MVD. However, a much smaller percent have a severe condition that require medication.
By feeding your puppy correctly and giving good exercise and socialization you will have a “Soul Friend” for a long time.
IMPORTANT TIPS:
1) NEVER LEAVE YOUR PUPPY UNATTENDED IN THE GARDEN. There is no such thing as a garden that is completely escape proof. Puppies and older Cavaliers will find all the holes you have in the fence or learn to dig underneath. Consider putting plastic mesh (Home Depot—can with scissor cut to size) over the bottom of all fences and folding 12”over on to the ground so they can not dig under.
2) YOU CAN LEAVE A PUPPY UNATTENDED IN AN X-PEN IN GARDEN FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME—good for creating a place for puppy to go to bathroom in confined area. Pick or create area with no grass –can put down smallest stones and put down 7’ x 4’ ground cover (TJ 10007) plastic mats. Use 30” X-Pen (ZW12830) for containment. To clean area use scoopers, (ZWB11012) and spray mat once a week with soap and water [go to petedge.com to see items]
3) NEVER LET PUPPY OFF OF LEAD—these are spaniels and will go after birds etc.
4) NEVER USE CHOKE COLLAR—could strangle puppy—use non-choke collar with name and tel# (TP59210) [go to petedge.com to see items]
You need to allocate an area and a bed which are the Cavaliers own, an area in a kitchen or utility room is best if possible
near to a door leading to the garden. Puppies should be crate trained and eat all meals and sleep in their crate. Buy a collapsible metal cage ( ZW51724 size 24" x 17" x 20" ) as the Cavaliers own house. This they find comfortable as they can walk inside and feel secure with the open bars around them. Leave one erected all the time with the entrance open so the dogs can wander in and out.
If you want puppy to have some unattended play time, start by confining the puppy to a play area. You can use an x-pen that is a least 3 feet tall--you need to protect cupboard doors or may other items from being scratched or chewed. As far as a bed is concerned, you can use same style bed as is in their crates.
Your Cavalier will also need its own water and feeding bowls, metal ones are safest and a small collar and lead. Not too expensive as they will soon need another stronger lead as they grow up.
If you allow puppy upstairs (versus playing in their area) you need to be with them ALL the time so they do not learn bad habits. Make sure there are no electrical leads or cables in the area you intend for the puppy --. Beware of staples, buttons and fasteners and anything else suitable for chewing. Young puppies should not be encouraged to jump up and down stairs on their weak young limbs-carry them until they are 6 months old.
Owning and caring for a dog is a life time commitment requiring both a personal and financial investment. We strongly encourage you to take time to go through a learning process to make your new Cavalier a “Soul Friend” for life.
